llona Huss Walin presents her video work Rat Export Hamlet, in which she lets live rats live out the roles of Shakespeare’s Hamlet. The play takes place in a castle interior built on the scale of the rats. The rats have not been trained, but improvise according to their own inclinations; as actors performing classical theatre, they take on a new dimension. The form of the film, in which sound also plays an important part, is the product of the artist’s efforts to combine two different worlds. As if Shakespeare’s drama were attempting to follow the rats’ improvisations.

I videoverket Rat export Hamlet låter jag levande råttor ha rollerna i Shakespeares drama Hamlet. Skådespelet äger rum i en slottsinteriör som är byggd i råttornas skala. Råttorna är inte dresserade utan improviserar efter egna behov och som aktörer i den klassiska genren får de en ny dimension. Filmens form, där även ljudet är en viktig del, är resultatet av min strävan att kombinera två olika världar: Som om Shakespeares drama försöker följa råttornas improvisationer.

Participants in the production
The rats were very well taken care of with good food, lot of space and lots of love.
Råttornas matte var med under filmningsveckan och de sköttes om väl. Installationerna byggs på ett sådant sätt att råttorna trivs med att vara i dem. Tamråttor är som små hundar, de tycker det är kul och stimulerande när jag arbetar med dem.
